. These techniques will help you build confidence in your system even when exact outputs vary.
Welcome back! In our previous lesson, we introduced pytest
and explored how to test traditional software applications. We wrote tests for things like calculators and bank accounts β systems where the output is predictable and deterministic. If you pass the same inputs, you get the exact same outputs every time.
But now we enter the world of AI applications β and things arenβt so simple.
Imagine asking your AI assistant, βHow do I reset my password?β Today it replies:
βClick the βForgot Passwordβ link on the login page and follow the instructions in your email.β
Tomorrow, same input. But now it says:
βGo to the login page, select βForgot Password,β and check your inbox for a reset link.β
Different wording, same intent. Nothing is broken β but how do you test that?
In this lesson, weβll learn how to test agentic AI systems β ones built with LLMs, tools, and logic flows β where outputs vary by design. Youβll discover how to:
Testing AI requires a shift in mindset β from βDid it say exactly this?β to βDid it behave the way it should?β
Letβs get started.
Traditional tests often boil down to one question: Did the output exactly match what I expected? But with LLMs and agentic systems, thatβs rarely the right question.
Instead, the goal is to check whether the system behaved correctly, safely, and usefully β even if the exact words change from one run to the next.
Hereβs the key mindset shift:
π― Youβre not testing for sameness β youβre testing for patterns, structure, and behaviors that indicate our AI is working as intended.
Let's explore what we can and should assert when testing AI applications.
Even if the wording changes, the output format usually doesnβt. Is the response a dictionary with the expected keys? Are the types correct? Are the values within reasonable bounds?

We are passing the ai_assistant
instance to the test functions. This is done using pytest fixtures, which we discussed in the previous lesson.
When you're confident certain terms should appear in a valid response, you can assert their presence directly β even if the phrasing varies.

These tests donβt care how the AI says it β only that the important content is there. This works well for narrow questions with clear expectations β like helpdesk tasks or FAQ bots.
AI systems often need to recognize and respond to specific entities or keywords. We can test that these are properly identified and addressed.

You donβt want your AI sounding sarcastic, vague, or inappropriate β especially with frustrated users.

Context testing helps ensure that memory, state, and continuity are working as expected.

You can set thresholds based on model latency, use case, or Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with your users.

Let's put everything we've learned into practice by testing the product listing AI we built in Week 2, Lesson 2 (From Text to Data: Hands-on LLM Output Parsing). If you recall, we created an AI system that takes a product description and returns structured JSON output with fields like name, price, features, and category.
This is a perfect example of how to test AI applications because while the exact output might vary, the structure and content patterns should remain consistent.
Here's how we can write comprehensive tests for our product listing AI:

This lesson focused on deterministic tests β things like structure validation, keyword presence, and tone enforcement. These checks are essential for catching obvious errors and enforcing constraints, especially when outputs can vary in form.
But theyβre only part of the picture.
In Week 7 (Module 2), we explored how to evaluate agentic systems using semantic metrics β things like faithfulness, relevance, and helpfulness. These go beyond syntax and structure to assess whether your system is actually producing high-quality results. We covered tools like RAGAS and DeepEval, which can evaluate LLM-based pipelines using LLM-as-a-judge, vector similarity, or golden references.
These evaluation tools arenβt just for benchmarking β they can be used inside your test suite alongside pytest to create semantic tests that check for correctness, factuality, and user alignment.
β Use deterministic tests to catch surface-level issues, and semantic evaluations to validate deeper model behavior β both are essential for reliable agentic systems.
