Overview

Causal Safety Engine is a safety-first validation and governance layer designed for AI agents and autonomous decision systems.

It does not aim to discover new causal relationships for optimization or intervention. Instead, it focuses on blocking unsafe, non-robust, or non-identifiable causal signals before they are used to justify autonomous actions.

The engine is intended to be used as a guardrail, not as a decision-maker.

Problem Addressed

Modern AI agents increasingly rely on correlations or weak causal signals to justify actions in high-risk environments.

This creates three major risks:

• Acting on spurious or unstable causal patterns
• Silent data leakage (future or proxy leakage)
• Lack of auditability and governance when decisions are overridden

Causal Safety Engine addresses these risks by enforcing strict causal and epistemic constraints before any signal can be considered actionable.

Core Principles

• Safety over discovery: silence is preferred to false positives
• No causal claims without identifiability
• No automatic authorization of actions
• Full auditability of decisions and violations

If causal evidence is insufficient, the engine deliberately produces no approval signal.

Technical Approach

The engine evaluates directed predictive influence under strict constraints, including:

• Minimum support and effect thresholds
• Sign stability across temporal slices
• Anti-leakage checks (future placebo tests)
• Negative control outcomes (when provided)
• Drift and robustness guardrails

Signals that fail any invariant are rejected or flagged.

What This Engine Is Not

• Not a general-purpose causal discovery system
• Not a counterfactual or intervention optimizer
• Not an autonomous decision engine
• Not a replacement for human governance

Its sole purpose is risk reduction and validation.
