Abstract

ArticleSummarizerWithChatGPT is a lightweight Chrome Extension that helps users quickly summarize any web article using ChatGPT. It generates a structured prompt tailored to the current page URL and selected language/country preferences. The tool is designed for users who prefer interacting with ChatGPT directly rather than using APIs, making it ideal for students, professionals, and researchers seeking rapid content insights without leaving their browser.

Methodology

This project operates entirely as a front-end Chrome Extension with no backend or API integration. The methodology is as follows:

1. Page Context Detection:

   • Uses Chrome's tab API to capture the active tab’s URL (i.e., the article page the user is viewing).

2. Language & Country Input:

   • Offers a language/country selector sourced from a local languages.json file.
   • Updates the generated prompt to reflect the selected context (e.g., summarizing in Turkish for Türkiye).

3. Prompt Generation:

   • Combines the captured URL and selected language into a predefined prompt template that asks ChatGPT to summarize the linked article in bullet points.

4. Clipboard + ChatGPT Redirection:

   • On button click, the extension:
     • Copies the prompt to clipboard.
     • Opens a new tab at chat.openai.com, where the user can paste and run the prompt.

5. No API or Content Extraction:

   • The extension does not access OpenAI APIs or fetch article content.
   • It also does not parse HTML or extract text, ensuring user privacy and simplicity.

Results

The extension was tested on a variety of news, blog, and long-form content platforms (e.g., BBC, Medium, Dev.to).

Observed Results:

• ✅ Users could summarize articles in their native language in less than 30 seconds.
• ✅ Prompts generated were consistent, clear, and ChatGPT responded with well-structured summaries.
• ✅ Zero reliance on APIs or article scraping, reducing complexity and privacy risks.
• ✅ Works effectively on any article page regardless of domain, since only the URL is passed.
