Abstract

This project explores the application of advanced computer vision and deep learning technologies for wildlife monitoring and conservation. Addressing the critical challenges of habitat loss, species endangerment, and human-wildlife conflict, this research introduces an automated system capable of detecting, identifying, and tracking wildlife across diverse habitats. By leveraging tools such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and YOLOv5, the system provides real-time analysis and insights, enabling effective conservation interventions and data-driven ecological research. The results demonstrate the system's potential to revolutionize wildlife monitoring practices and contribute to global conservation efforts.

Model

Architecture

The proposed model for wildlife detection and monitoring leverages YOLOv5 for efficient object detection and classification. Key components include:

Input Processing:

YOLOv5 Backbone:

This component extracts spatial and semantic features from the input data. A convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture is used to identify hierarchical patterns, such as edges and textures, crucial for detecting wildlife.

YOLOv5 Neck:

The neck aggregates features at different scales to improve detection accuracy for animals of varying sizes and positions in the frame. It employs path aggregation networks (PANs) for multi-scale feature fusion.

YOLOv5 Head:

The head outputs bounding boxes, confidence scores, and class labels for detected objects. Non-max suppression (NMS) ensures that overlapping boxes are filtered, retaining the most relevant detections.

Post-Processing:

Results are refined by applying thresholds for confidence and class probabilities. Outputs include bounding boxes over detected animals, along with their classifications.

Training and Validation

Dataset:

A curated dataset of diverse wildlife images and videos was used, featuring multiple species in varying environmental conditions. Data augmentation techniques, such as flipping, cropping, and brightness adjustments, improved generalization.

Loss Function:

The model uses a combination of localization, confidence, and classification loss to optimize predictions.
